Local Transport Questiontime 2025: Making Tendring District’s transport the priority

Despite the Frinton Residents Association AGM and other meetings happening on the same day around twenty or more public and members attended ONTRACK TENDRING TRANSPORT USERS “QUESTIONTIME” event Saturday 17th May 2025 at the Frinton Gospel Chapel. More came after the main business part of the Frinton Residents Association meeting.

There were representatives from Holland Residents and Kirby Residents. All listened intently to both Shane Buffham of Hedingham-Chambers and Alan Neville from Greater Anglia.

Shane Buffham Operations Manager Hedingham Chambers spoke via a broadcast Zoom link about the planned bus service route changes, and Alan Neville in person explained the overall good performance, recognised by the various industry awards and what might lay in the future with “renationalisation” scheduled to take place 12th October 2025

The “Sunshine Coast Line”

The line from Colchester (North) to Clacton-on-Sea is an electrified double track railway serving the villages of Wivenhoe, Alresford, Great Bentley, Weeley and Thorpe-le-Soken. The station of Hythe serves the eastern districts of Colchester and is the nearest station to Essex University. At Colchester there is a short branch to Colchester Town serving the town centre. From Thorpe-le-Soken there is the single line branch to the coastal resort of Walton-on-the-Naze, also serving the village of Kirby Cross and the seaside town of Frinton-on-Sea.

Traffic on the line is passenger only. There is currently no parcels or freight transported on these routes. Passenger traffic is generally commuter-based to Colchester and London, but also to other areas of employment like Ipswich and Chelmsford. Schools and colleges in Colchester help to increase traffic at peak times. Shoppers in the area generally travel to Colchester Town. The beach resorts of Clacton-on-Sea, Frinton-on-Sea, and Walton-on-the-Naze attract holiday traffic in the summer months.
